Whether you’re planning for presentations, product development, or your next blog post, it is essential to consider your audience or end user, in order to construct a coherent story for maximum impact. Sadly… this doesn’t always happen…!

Mind mapping can be a great way to build and develop the structure of your story before committing it to the end format (which might be slides, a written article, or something else), but how do you move from this early stage thinking to a powerful end product? Our next PRO webinar will show you how…!

We are delighted to welcome Nicky Meijer as our next PRO webinar speaker, where she will be sharing the story mapping approach developed with her colleagues at GriDD, an innovative team of information architects based in the Netherlands. Ahead of the webinar, we asked Nicky a few key questions…

Who will benefit most from joining this webinar?

You will benefit from this webinar if you’re looking for a structured way to use mind maps to tell great stories! Our method is quite straight forward, has been tried and tested many times by our customers and trainees and enables you to focus on what matters most: the information you’ll want to convey.

People who are willing to think a little bit outside the box when considering mind mapping techniques will probably like this webinar more than mind mapping purists. The way we use mind mapping techniques to create impactful presentations is not the ‘one word on a line’ kind of mind mapping and is more akin to structured brainstorming.

What are some of the key challenges you will discuss?

A key challenge to creating impactful stories is that people do not consider their audience enough. This leads them to include too much, too little or too fragmented information to convey to their audience. It also makes them choose the format and storyline for their stories out of convenience rather than choosing the best way to deliver the message based on the information needed, the goals to reach and their audience needs. Using mind mapping as a starting point can help with that.

What are the key learning outcomes your webinar will provide?

Sometimes when I share our mind mapping method for storytelling, people are sceptical and feel creating a mind map is an unnecessary step. They start directly in the software they are looking to use to create the aids for their story, such as Powerpoint slides. Or the complete opposite applies: when people feel the resulting mind map is seen as the way to present.

In this webinar, I hope to show you what makes a story impactful and what are aspects to consider. You will get an idea on how to use Mind Maps when you are creating a story for a presentation, a video or even an infographic. I’ll share insights into our way of working using a watermark ‘placemat’ for structure: GriDD’s Effective Story Canvas.

When were you first introduced to mind mapping?

I was first introduced to mind mapping when I started secondary school. My father, who is a teacher, sat me down one night and told me he would teach me how to study effectively. He taught me to summarize information and help make connections by mind mapping a book chapter on one A4 paper. My mother, a true visual thinker, followed suit by teaching me to incorporate visuals or translate the mind mapped information to visuals. I am so glad they taught me, as it has helped me so much in my work and studies. So, mind mapping has been one of my go-to information processing methods since childhood and I really enjoy spreading my love for it!

How does mind mapping fit into your world?

It’s actually quite a big part of it! Whenever I need to process complex information or just a lot of information, I create mind maps. What I’ll share with you in this webinar is that I always create a mind map as my outline for a presentation either using mind mapping software, post-its on GriDD’s visual canvas or by drawing on a large whiteboard. My hardcopy notebook is never lined so it can be used to mind map my notes and add visuals. At the office, we create mind maps on the large whiteboard together when we have brainstorming meetings or when we want to make information more tangible. A great way to clarify things for all.

What is your experience of being part of the Biggerplate community?

Being a part of the Biggerplate Community to me means learning more about what mind mapping and visual thinking can do and meeting others on the same quest!
